We believe that design potential is everywhere – in every detail, every conversation, and every partnership.
That’s why, for more than 15 years, the Blender team has cultivated strong, hands-on relationships with our manufacturing partners in China. These connections aren’t just about logistics and production; they’re essential to ensuring our designs are practical, resilient, and ready for the real world.
Recently, Blender’s co-founder, Ollie McDermott, spent an intensive 10 days in China, navigating a packed schedule of factory visits and supplier meetings across seven cities. His insights offer a unique perspective on how these trips enhance Blender’s design process and directly benefit our clients. From gaining essential manufacturing insights to exploring innovative techniques, Ollie explains why these visits are a crucial part of our commitment to creating world-class products.

Beyond cost savings – China’s true manufacturing value.
When people think of manufacturing in China, there’s often a misconception that it’s all about cutting costs and compromising on quality. But at Blender, we know that’s far from the truth. Our experience has shown us that, with the right approach, China offers not only affordable manufacturing but also exceptional capabilities, scalable infrastructure, and craftsmanship that can truly elevate a product.
“We don’t source from China because it’s cheap,” says Ollie. “When we source from China it’s because they’re capable.” China’s manufacturing ecosystem provides Blender with the flexibility to scale production efficiently, handling both small and large volumes to meet growing client demands. “The scalability is a huge advantage for our clients,” adds Ollie. “Whether you need a prototype batch or are scaling up for market demand, the infrastructure in China lets us do it all seamlessly.”
Beyond scalability, China’s logistical infrastructure and entrepreneurial drive make it a powerhouse for complex manufacturing projects. With efficient supply chains and dedicated partners, Blender can bring precision and speed to even the most intricate product requirements, helping clients turn concepts into market-ready realities.
Face-to-face and hands-on
Quality at Blender doesn’t happen by accident – it’s the result of hands-on partnerships with trusted manufacturers. For us, achieving great quality means getting involved at every stage and building a collaborative dynamic with our suppliers. “If you want great quality, you have to work with your suppliers, not just hand off your design and hope for the best,” says Ollie.
Over the past 15 years, Blender has built hands-on relationships with manufacturers across China, transforming these connections into powerful collaborations that drive quality and reliability.
“When we visit China, it makes us better at what we do because we understand the ins and outs of how things are made,” Ollie explains. He emphasises that having a physical presence – being able to see the production process firsthand – enables Blender to identify potential issues, make real-time adjustments, and push for quality that meets our high standards.
“Seeing it with your own eyes… it’s incredibly valuable,” he adds. By treating our suppliers as partners rather than vendors, we ensure that every detail aligns with our client’s vision, from initial concept to final production.

Weeding out the weak links.
A deep understanding of the entire supply chain is essential to maintaining quality and minimising risks. On his recent trip, Ollie visited 16 factories, diving into each layer of the supply chain – from assembly plants to component suppliers – to gather insights that would be impossible to achieve remotely.
“Going down through the layers in the supply chain really helps us understand where all the different quality points happen,” he explains. “This transparency means we can address any production issues early, and that’s key to consistency and reliability.”
Blender tailors supply chains based on each client’s specific needs, sometimes even setting up processes with multiple suppliers to manage different production phases.
“It’s about not putting all your eggs in one basket,” says Ollie. “By establishing a resilient network of suppliers, we can adapt to project requirements and reduce risks without compromising on quality or timelines”. For our clients, this means a secure, agile manufacturing process – one that can pivot to meet unexpected changes while keeping quality at the forefront.
Waste not, want not.
Seeing manufacturing in action is invaluable not only for managing quality but also for reducing waste. “When you’re designing from the office, it’s easy to be detached from the reality of what it takes to make a product,” says Ollie. “Being there allows us to spot potential issues, get to the root cause, and problem-solve quickly, leading to reduced lead times and better production yield.
“It means we can balance high standards with realistic expectations. We often expect perfection, but defects happen, and the stricter your quality standards, the more waste you create,” Ollie explains.
By understanding how much scrap is generated, Blender can make smarter, more sustainable decisions – striking a balance between quality control and waste reduction. This approach supports a more sustainable product development cycle, allowing us to create high-quality products with a smaller environmental footprint.
